    We want to do Service/Volunteerism. We also want cultural exchanges and long term visits with families so our children can make connections. In each country. We are avoiding Europe.

    Australia --> Asia/India --> Jordan --> Africa --> South America

    Our plan is to start our trip with a cross country trip from west coast to east coast. This will help us learn the ropes on how to travel long term and still have access to the luxury of everything familiar. Once we make it across the country (2 to 4 months), we plan to fly to Europe and set up a home base in Spain. Stay for a few months. Then we will fly to south east Asia and set up a home base in Thailand or Malaysia. We might end the trip with visiting our family in China and flying back to the west coast.

    At the moment we're considering how long we can afford to travel for, so will limit where we go to give us enough time in the places we want to go. It is looking like we'll head to parts of Europe we've not been to, some USA, Canada, Hawaii, and possibly Oz & New Zealand

    We wanted to hit all 5 continents (excluding our own and Antartica), as my daughter was studying the continents in school. We also wanted to hit some nature spots where we could see different biomes and the plants, animals and birds that live in them. We're just realizing that Machu Picchu may need to be cut...too expensive and we've had to substitute Addo Elephant National Park instead of Kruger National Park to cut down on travel time and costs. As a first time RTW family planner, I'm probably being too ambitious, but am scaling back as the planning progresses. While our major flights are booked, I'm realizing we'll need many more internal flights to get to the nature spots.

    The initial plan is to go to where we have friends, or friends of friends, and add some other places that sound interesting, which makes for a very long list! So far, we have Ireland, Scotland, London, Iran, Kenya, France, Spain, Italy (for the Ferrari factory!), New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica and maybe SE Asia. I think we may need to cut some out, as we want to be gone a year, and travel slowly.

    We hope to briefly hit each continent: stay with friends in Sweden, Safari in Zambia, Tall buildings and desert in Dubai, Angkor Wat, Great Barrier reef, Easter Island, Patagonia/Antarctica, Macchu Picchu. Thinking 6-7 months

    My family and I are definitely starting in India. then I think we'll shoot over to Vietnam for 4-6 weeks, onto Thailand for a month, then Austrailia and NZ where we hope to stay with some friends and family for part of the time to save some money. Then back home to recover and plan the next leg ... hopefully a few months driving across America and then over the pond to Europe - Greece, Italy and Germany with Ireland and England if we're lucky.

    I have traveled to many places already so I will concentrate on a few countries only. I want my family to speak Spanish so I plan to start our journey in a Spanish speaking country for 6 months at least. Then we want to visit Japan, China and the French indies. Not sure yet of route. If any one knows a safe and affordable place to go in South America!!!

    We aren't sure yet, we have a general plan though. Our 9 year old son's priority is any city with a Legoland. Plus, he has a friend in Japan, and another who goes to Eastern Europe every summer to visit family. For me, I'd love to spend an extended time in South East Asia, partly because of the low costs but also because we love it. My husband and I have both spent time there, pre-kid. Also on the list are Sri Lanka (we have a friend there with a kid), Jordan (to see Petra), Greece, North Africa. In the end we'll see where life takes us. We're picking a direction and just going!

    Our initial plan is to stick to the US for a while. The RTW will come in the future. One of our children has Type 1 Diabetes and I don't even want to start to think about trying to order supplies, keeping supplies refrigerated, or access to emergency care in a foreign country at this point. She usually sees a specialist every 3 months and we plan on stretching that to 6 mths instead with phone and email contact in btw. Therefore, I think our first few trips will be 6 mth jaunts out from home (Raleigh, NC) and back. We have a lot of family in this area as well. Time or year will determine whether we head north or south first. For North- the kids want New York City and Washington DC and I want New England. For South- the kids want Florida beaches and I want Savannah and the Florida keys. It's a start! :)

    Our first dream of travel outside the US is Central and S.America. We dream of visiting it all without having an end date.
