I definitely want to write to blog to log our journey first then if we can make money out o it why not. How does one start a travel blog while still at home?
Working on that.

"home style." definitely, when vacationing we always stay in hotels. We never couchsurf although I just created an account just in case and I am ready to host just to have a feel of it.
As we are going to travel very slow, I will be renting flats, I started looking into airbnb. I would like to try a hostel at least once just to experience it maybe when we will travel in South East Asia as I heard it is very cheap to rent a family room there.
The idea of living on only one carry on is scary, we are over packers, even for our short holidays we have massive luggage... I decided to go with a backpack instead to force us to pack light. It is very difficult to choose what to take what to leave behind. But having a backpack limit the amount you can put in. I read so many lists on blogs that we have an idea of what essentials to take in general. I bought a few items like convertible/multiway dresses and zip-off pants just to add to our options but we mainly will take things we like wearing at home. We will be gone for a full year and; I don't want to have to buy too many things on the road if I can help it; as, we will be traveling on a budget so we are working very hard that list.
For us gadgets are a must for home schooling/work and entertainment all together.
Me: Laptop, Tablet, unlock BlackBerry, old camcorder (for photos and videos ) & external hard drive
Daughter 1 & 2: Notebook x2, kindle x2, DSi x2 (DSi will serve as camera as well), unlocked phone x2, 4 SD cards

Photos are the things I have trouble to part with, we have tons of them. All would fit in one big box (we will rent our house and our garage got an attic we will be able to store things). I am happy to get rid of most things, I can't imagine how much stuff we got since I started clearing up, so much crap. Every-time I drop a bag at a charity shop or give something away; I feel better. I am also selling stuff on eBay for extra cash. I will start garage sale in 2 weeks time, sorting out everything right now; It is a long progress. I am at the same time seriously considering a minimalist lifestyle even when I come back.

I am so exited to be planning the trip that I told everyone; but I was disappointed with their reactions, it was more criticisms; disbelief; consternation, etc... no one really took it with open arms or open mind. But my kids did as they can see me selling everything on eBay already or giving away stuff. I guess they all will come around when I will organise the goodbye "party".

I will enroll my daughters to online learning so they can continue working on the same level as their friends while abroad. I am not too worried about educating my kids while on the road; now days with Internet, no need to carry huge books as there is so much available online.

Jennifer that sound great, house sitting. For me it is a long way until we actually go but I definitely want to take it very very slow, up to 6 months in one place in some cases and move on. We will definitely travel all around South America for at least 6 months to improve our Spanish then go to South East Asia for 3 months and so on. We will have 2 years to go wherever we choose to.

Hi, reading your emails and forum made me realize that I might want to just go and live in a different country for a few months then move to the next one but traveling very slow. So not a typical RTW. I would need help in finding an affordable and safe Hispanic country to start our trip.

I have traveled to many places already so I will concentrate on a few countries only. I want my family to speak Spanish so I plan to start our journey in a Spanish speaking country for 6 months at least. Then we want to visit Japan, China and the French indies. Not sure yet of route. If any one knows a safe and affordable place to go in South America!!!
It is my last chance to experience something meaningful with my eldest daughter before she goes to university. She is 15 and a half, I feel like time flies too quickly and if I don't slow down now and take the time to be with my children, it will be too late.
We will rent our house of a year as this can also be a source of our income once on the road.

My plan is to travel with both my daughters who will be 13 and 17 by the time we live. I am not sure what my 17 years old mind will be then. She would have just finished her A Level and might not want a gap year anymore. She might want then to stay behind and go straight to university or else as she would be turning 18 a few months after. This is one of the thing I am preparing myself to adjust.
After reading all the valuable information on this website, i now decided to travel very slow and stay from 1 to 3 months in one place.
I want us all as a family to learn at least one language (spanish) while away; so we will settle for 3 to 6 months to a spanish speaking country ( already have some knowledge).
Schooling is a concern for me but I am looking through online/distance learning.
I am planning a RTW in 2 years time when my eldest daughter finishes her A Level. My kids will be 13 & 17 almost 18.
It will be only my daughters and myself on that trip, I am a little bit worried to travel alone with them.
We travelled a lot around the world already on vacations but always with my husband then.
I have been talking about leaving for a RTW with friends and my kids but my friends seem a bit dubious and don't comment on it, they probably think I am crazy and won't do it :).
My kids in the other hand know that I am serious about it as I starting "our" minimalist way of living by selling most of all we own on eBay.
I would love for other families preparing the RTW to get in touch so we car share ideas.
I am in the early stages of planning, mainly finding ways to save to fund the trip.
Very happy to have found this forum
