Does anyone have an idea if an iPad Air or Air2 with a keyboard would be sufficient for my son to do his online schoolwork while we are traveling for a year? Or should we get a laptop?
      Thanks!

I'm thinking of using my local credit union credit card, as I already have a bank account with them, and I found out their card has no foreign currency exchange fees, no annual fees, and a modest rewards program. Their rewards may not be as good as my United Mileage Plus card, but I like the idea of not being restricted by the United's awards program. However, if it looks like I will fly a lot of Star Alliance airlines, then I might get the United Explorer's card, which has good benefits, no transaction fees, and will earn me lots of mileage points.

I appreciate the comments below, and wonder if any of you will return to this site now that you may be finished with your trip and report on the results of your educational plan. My thoughts for my 11-year-old's education on the one-year trip are similar to those below, and I'd like to know how realistic they are!

We are starting in Ireland next July, because we will go with our neighbors who are from there. After a couple of weeks, they will go home, and we will start the rest of the adventure. I'm still having trouble figuring out the good weather-northern/southern hemisphere itinerary. For example, we may need to leave Europe before we're finished, and then return later.

Jennifer, can you give more details on the Sulawesi and Borneo ideas? Google maps didn't show me anything specific enough for me to look into. They sound exciting! Thanks!

We will be traveling for a year, and I was thinking of slowing down in Kenya, after a safari, of course, to volunteer at a school for a month or so, and also in southern Spain where a friend offered a house for as long as we want to be there. She also offered to look into a job offer for me teaching English in a school for children. So maybe three months there, including Christmas, so we'll be with a friend for the holidays. But the rest is pretty up in the air.

I like Jennifer's approach and appreciate the advice about getting to know the local discounters. One of my frustrations now is that I am eager to plan everything, but can't get tickets more than one year in advance. I think it might be a good idea to book the first few flights in advance, especially where there are date restrictions due to friends we will meet/stay with, and then book the rest of the trip as I go.

The initial plan is to go to where we have friends, or friends of friends, and add some other places that sound interesting, which makes for a very long list! So far, we have Ireland, Scotland, London, Iran, Kenya, France, Spain, Italy (for the Ferrari factory!), New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica and maybe SE Asia. I think we may need to cut some out, as we want to be gone a year, and travel slowly.

My main concern in this topic at the moment is that my 10-year-old son will find friends his age along the way. It's just the two of us traveling for one year. If there are any other single parents with one child out there, I'd love to hear what your experiences or thoughts are. I am expecting and looking forward to traveling slowly and staying in several places for a month or so at a time. And as other travelers have said, taking it one day at a time, being willing to change plans midstream and not expecting all our idiosyncrasies will magically disappear because we are in a different place!

I'm taking myself and my 10-year-old son around the world for a year. No problem answering the why--I have many reasons. One obvious reason is because I can. But the more specific ones are: After my husband died, I needed to reinvent my life and find a new focus; I traveled a lot when I was younger and want to see more; I want my son to see how people around the world live and expand his view of what makes for a good, satisfying life; I realized I can finance much of the trip by renting out my house while we are away; I like the idea of my son and I getting a chance to experience extraordinary things together and so learn how to understand, appreciate and love each other even more. Those are good enough reasons for me!

I came up with the idea in June of this year to take my son on a trip around the world for one year, decided on it in August and plan to leave July 2015. I was quiet about it at first, but now I've told lots of people, especially now that my son's classmates' parents are all asking what middle school he will be going to next year! So far I haven't heard any negative comments or reactions, except to the plan to include Iran in the trip (with someone who is from there and goes back every year).
