We will do a blog to let family and friends follow our journey. Writing on the blog will be part of the girls 'road schooling' work. It will also be nice to have to look back on in the future.

I'm in the middle of booking our accommodations and so far have used Expedia, AirBNB & WOOFing. I looked into couch surfing, house sitting and other free options, but most are geared toward a single traveler. The thing that's driving me crazy right now is the 'extra guest fee' rampant in Australia. Even when I'm booking a 'family room', there is an extra per person charge after the first two guests. I'm even finding this on AirBNB! Another thing to look out for is whether the house has laundry included...especially if we're supposed to back light. Other than that, we're going to be staying in some pretty interesting places and it is something I'm really looking forward to.

We're leasing our cars. One lease we will not renew and the other one, we'll look into sub-leasing. We'll also use Craigslist, have a garage sale and donate to Goodwill. Hope to rent out place furnished and store our clothes in garage.

My parents had just come back from their own trip, so were a bit shell shocked and skeptical at first, but are trying to be supportive. Most others are excited and plan to follow our blog once we get going. The first question is usually about my husband's job.

We are beginning our RTW trip in Peru this September. We were thinking of starting in Costa Rica, but the flight there was too expensive. We're doing the Southern Hemisphere first because it will be springtime and a little less expensive. That means we'll end up in Europe in winter, but we'll try and stick to the southern part.

So far, we are planning overnight train travel in South Africa (Jo'burg to Port Elizabeth), then renting a car to drive along the garden route, then probably flying back from Cape Town to Jo'burg due to time constraints. We are also planning the overnight train in Kenya (Nairobi to Mombasa). Our girls are 5 & 8. If anyone has done these trains trips, let me know how they were. We'll probably take the train in India, but we're not that far into the planning process. Flights from Lima to Cusco in Peru are about the same cost as taking a bus. Does anyone recommend a bus between Rio and São Paulo?

I'm just starting to book accommodations and am trying to keep the costs down by booking through VRBO. I've also found some good deals on Expedia, as you can book hostels through them. My rough estimate pre-trip is $1,000 a week on the road, but that seems a bit tight, as we will have a lot of overland expenses. Still working through it all.

I used Airtreks for all my flights into and out of a country, since they have access to most airlines and since I don't have miles built up. I'm a planner, so preferred to have those taken care of. I'm hoping it will make my Visas easier to get if we can show arrival/departure dates. I'm still contemplating how to book internal flights, as some sites say it's cheaper to book in-country. I had a budget for airfare in mind, which we mostly met, though again, it does come at a 'time' cost. I'm not looking forward to boarding a plane at midnight with my two girls (5 & 8), though using red-eyes was a way to keep the monetary costs down. I'll know after our trip if that was a smart decision or not.

Making the trip kid-friendly and nature themed, has helped us choose locations. Weather and cost have also narrowed down our list. For example, we really wanted to see the Pandas in China, but it will be winter when we're in that region, so cut it out. Flights to Costa Rica were too expensive, so we'll see the rain forests in Borneo instead. These parameters have helped keep things manageable. What we miss this time, we hope to do another time :-)

My progress is going ok. My main hurdle is people not getting back to me in a timely manner. I'm sometimes waiting 2 weeks to get a response from a potential accommodation. I would also like to know if it's better (cheaper) to book internal flights once you're in the country or to add them to the Airtreks routing? Also, how long do you recommend staying in a country with 2 kids before moving to the next destination. We have 2 weeks in first 5 countries, then 3-4 each in last 4 countries/regions. Is that too much?

We wanted to hit all 5 continents (excluding our own and Antartica), as my daughter was studying the continents in school. We also wanted to hit some nature spots where we could see different biomes and the plants, animals and birds that live in them. We're just realizing that Machu Picchu may need to be cut...too expensive and we've had to substitute Addo Elephant National Park instead of Kruger National Park to cut down on travel time and costs. As a first time RTW family planner, I'm probably being too ambitious, but am scaling back as the planning progresses. While our major flights are booked, I'm realizing we'll need many more internal flights to get to the nature spots.

We want to expand our horizons, learn different perspectives and experience things first hand. After being home with my daughters for the past couple of years, I need to see something beyond the walls of our house! My husband also wants to expand his thinking as it's easy to get caught up in 'group think'. My daughters love the idea of 'home' schooling and are looking forward to seeing their favorite animals in the animals' home territory.

We are renting our house and want to return to it at the end of our 6 month trip. We spoke to our landlady and she has agreed to let us sublet it :-)
We hope to sublet it furnished, but if not, we'll put our things in the garage. We don't like owning too much stuff to begin with, so I'm constantly paring down.
